Building on a strong foundation in 2024, 2025 has been a year of acceleration, scale, and enterprise impact for HexaCluster’s PostgreSQL initiatives. Our technical team, led by CTO, Gilles Darold, continued to strengthen PostgreSQL adoption by advancing open-source tooling, improving Oracle compatibility, and addressing real-world migration and production challenges faced by enterprises.

From deeper Oracle-to-PostgreSQL compatibility to migration automation at scale, our work in 2025 reflects one core mission: Make PostgreSQL the easiest and safest destination for any database migration.

New PostgreSQL Tools and Extensions announced in 2025

oid2bytea

Program used to convert large objects columns in a PostgreSQL database into bytea. oid2bytea will automatically detect the oid columns and process their bytea transformation automatically; parallel processing can be used to accelerate the migration.

Major updates to existing tools and extensions

Ora2Pg

Versions released: 25.0

Description: Ora2Pg, is a free tool to support Oracle to PostgreSQL schema conversions and data migration, with satisfactory support for MySQL to PostgreSQL.

Ora2Pg: https://ora2pg.darold.net/

Throughout this year, we have been focusing on HexaRocket, an end-to-end database migration tool, in extending its capabilities to support Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL and MariaDB to PostgreSQL database migrations seamlessly.

During this time, we only included some of the important fixes either contributed by other developers or the ones that we thought were necessary.

Some of those features are as follows.

  • Add multiple assessment report format output at once.

  • Support more Oracle to PostgreSQL exception mapping.

  • Allow overriding PG_SUPPORTS_* settings as they are set in the configuration file.

  • Add parsing of ALTER statement from file for the QUERY action.

  • Add support for oracle_fdw COPY using CSV format

  • Add parallel exports of each partition. Until now, all partitions of a partitioned table were exported serially in a single process.

  • Allow online data migration to continue if the destination table does not exist when ON_ERROR_STOP is disabled.

  • Tables data export is now done using the current SCN to have the same snapshot of data between multi-process exports.

  • Add support for oracle_fdw in combination with psql "\copy" and server-side COPY using BINARY stream for data movement. Brings both local and server-side oracle_fdw binary copy into one branch. Control over which mode is used is provided via ORACLE_FDW_COPY_MODE configuration, which defaults to "local".

  • Add support for data movement using psql copy selecting over oracle_fdw

    • Type INSERT (when FDW_SERVER is set) preserves prior behaviour of both INSERT and COPY
    • Type COPY (when FDW_SERVER is set) uses a new mode of using the psql with \copy with TO PROGRAM...FROM STDIN BINARY...BINARY
  • Convert DBMS_SQL cursor/parsing/execute simple form to PostgreSQL dynamic query execution.

  • Add replacement of the MOD operator.

  • Add some additional objects/difficulties assessment migration scores:

    • WHEN OTHER THEN exception clause that hide the real problem during migration.
    • 'SSSSS' and 'J' for to_char() that could need rewrites.
  • Add SCRIPT action to process sqlplus scripts.

pgBadger

Versions released: 13.1, 13.2

pgBadger 13.1: https://www.postgresql.org/about/news/pgbadger-v131-released-3040/

pgBadger 13.2: https://www.postgresql.org/about/news/pgbadger-v132-released-3207/

Description: pgBadger is a fast PostgreSQL log analysis with fully detailed reports and graphs.

The two versions published this year are maintenance releases that fixes issues reported by users since last release and adds some new features:

  • New report about vacuum throughput with a graph about vacuum per table that consumes more CPU. The table output reports I/O timing read and write per table as well as the CPU time elapsed on the table.
  • Adds frozen pages and tuples to the Vacuums per table report.
  • Add the --no-fork option for debugging purposes to not fork processes at all.
  • Add milliseconds to the raw csv output.
  • Add log filename to sample reports when multiple files are processed.
  • Update pgFormatter code to v5.9
  • Add github CI action for testing on commit push.
  • Fix parsing of %r placeholder in log_line_prefix.
  • Enhance docs of ssh-options for postgreSQL log parsing with examples.
  • Add command --ssh-sudo to run commands over ssh as sudo.

credcheck

Versions released: 4.0 to 4.3

credcheck 4.1 released: https://www.postgresql.org/about/news/credcheck-v41-has-been-released-3156/ credcheck 4.3 released: https://www.postgresql.org/about/news/credcheck-v43-has-been-released-3203/

Description: the credcheck extension provides few general credential checks, which will be evaluated during user creation, during the password change and user renaming.

A lot of work has been done this year on this extension to cover most of the security policies requirements.

  • When a user changes their password and a VALID UNTIL clause is not set, credcheck will automatically set to “now() + credcheck.password_valid_until”
  • Extended the functionality of 'username_contain' and 'username_not_contain' gucs to allow users to use substrings instead of single characters only.
  • Add a feature to send a warning to the user N days before their password expires.
  • Add force password change at first logging. This feature allows to force the users to change their password after the account creation. It is also possible to force any user to change their password at any time with this feature.
  • Prevent credcheck code to be executed in parallel and background workers.

pg_dbms_errlog

Versions released: 2.2

pg_dbms_errlog 2.2 released: https://www.postgresql.org/about/news/pg_dbms_errlog-v22-released-3161/

Description: The pg_dbms_errlog extension provides the infrastructure that enables you to create an error logging table so that DML operations can continue after encountering errors rather than aborting and rolling back.

This release fixes PostgreSQL version 17 compatibility issues and problems reported by users since last release

pg_statement_rollback

Versions released: 1.5

pg_statement_rollback 1.5 released: https://www.postgresql.org/about/news/pg_statement_rollback-v15-released-3147/

Description: pg_statement_rollback is a PostgreSQL extension to add server-side transactions with rollback at statement level like in Oracle or DB2.

This maintenance release fixes portability on PostgreSQL version 18.

pg_dumpbinary

Versions released: 2.19, 2.20

Description: pg_dumpbinary is a program used to dump a PostgreSQL database with data dumped in binary format. The resulting dumps must be restored using pg_restorebinary.

This is a maintenance release that fixes some issues reported by users since last release and adds some enhancements:

  • Change directory to writable one when sudo -u is used to avoid pg_restore complaining about "could not change directory" when the current directory is not writable by the running user.
  • Add -V, --verbose option to pg_restorebinary.
  • Set application_name to program name when connecting to PostgreSQL.

pgFormatter

Versions released: 5.6 to 5.9

pgFormatter 5.9 released: https://www.postgresql.org/about/news/pgformatter-v59-has-been-released-3199/

Description: PostgreSQL SQL and PLPGSQL syntax beautifier

These four releases improve a lot of code formatting.

  • Add extra newline after ariga/atlas related comment line.
  • pgFormatter is now able to distinguish between single values and multiple values INSERT statement and format them differently.
  • Better formatting of UPSERT queries.
  • Better formatting of some form of CTE queries.
  • Add support to Perl v5.42
  • Add support to pg_vector operator <#> and the @? jsonb-jsonpath operator.
  • Follow the XDG Base Directory Specification by searching the configuration file into XDG_CONFIG_HOME/pg_format/config.conf.
  • Add to_reg* and reg* to the function list.
  • Expand web capabilities of the app by adding API-like JSON capability to the CGI module.
  • Add option --redundant-parenthesis to prevent pgFormatter from removing redundant parenthesis in DML.

squidclamav

Versions released: 7.4

Description: HTTP Antivirus for Squid based on ClamAv and the ICAP protocol

This version adds compatibility with GCC v15.

Description: pgtt is a PostgreSQL extension to create, manage and use Oracle-style Global Temporary Tables and the others RDBMS.

  • These four releases fix some issues reported by users and add some improvements.
  • Preserve pg_catalog at the end of search_path if it is the case to allow pg_catalog overloaded function to be executed.
  • Preserve $user and other elements in search_path.
  • Add missing PGDLLEXPORT tags on callback functions; that are needed on windows.

external_file

Versions released: 1.2

external_file 1.2 released: https://www.postgresql.org/about/news/external_file-v12-has-been-released-3069/

Description: Allow access to "external files" from PostgreSQL server file systems.

  • Change unauthorized characters to .. instead of / and \ to support subfolders in filename.
  • Performance improvement in readEfile() with a single SQL statement instead of an iteration.
